The most common non-tooth pain that I see in my Charlotte NC practice is jaw muscle pain. The two primary causes for this pain are Occluso-Muscle Disorder and Bruxism (excessive grinding of teeth) or a combination of the two. Charlotte NC dentists should have an understanding of these disorders and the other causes of muscle pain.

The following is from:  www.mayoclinic.com

The most common causes of muscle pain are tension, stress, overuse and minor injuries. This type of pain is usually localized, affecting just one or more muscles or parts of your body. Systemic muscle pain, which you feel throughout your body, is different. It's more often the result of an infection; an illness, such as fibromyalgia or polymyalgia rheumatica; or a medication, such as a statin, and should be evaluated by your doctor. Common causes of muscle pain include:       • Chronic exertional compartment syndrome
      • Chronic fatigue syndrome
      • Claudication
      • Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
      • Dermatomyositis
      • Fibromyalgia
      • Influenza (flu)
      • Lupus
      • Lyme disease
      • Medications, especially statins
      • Muscle cramp
      • Muscle strain or rupture
      • Myofascial pain syndrome
      • Polymyalgia rheumatica
      • Polymyositis
      • Porphyria
      • Post-polio syndrome
      • Repetitive strain injuries
      • Rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life-threatening condition in which         muscle fibers break down and enter your bloodstream —         sometimes as a side effect of using statin drugs
      • Rocky Mountain spotted fever
      • Staph infections
      • Viral infections

A common cause for muscle pain with my Charlotte North Carolina NC area patients is myofascial pain It is important that a Charlotte North Carolina area dentist is familiar with this type of pain.
