Not all root canal infections can be avoided with our pulp capand pulpotomy procedures (see below). However, when completed, theses procedures are highly successful resulting in teeth that are infection free and fully healed.

If there is one thing that my Charlotte NC area patients appreciate, it is avoiding a root canal. I am happy to say that I am preventing many root canal procedures for my patients. Were are avoiding root canals because, first and foremost we are practicing minimally invasive and preventive dentistry. Root canals are most commonly done when a cavity enters the nerve or pulp of the tooth. When this occurs, most dentists recommend a root canal procedure. This is not the case in my Charlotte NC office. As a holistic and biological dentist I now use oxygen-ozone to treat the tooth structure and pulp tissue (this is not a root canal procedure). This procedure helps minimize microbial infection on the tooth structure and in the pulp (nerve) and it helps the pulp tissue heal. With this technique I have prevented many root canals or tooth removals for our patients. When a tooth is too infected to perform this procedure, and a root canal is not going to be performed, the tooth can be extracted and a bridge or a implant can be placed.

The following are two cases demonstrating my use of ozone to prevent root canals on teeth with advanced decay.

Case 1, Pulp Cap

This is not a root canal procedure.
This is done to prevent a root canal or the removal of a tooth.
This is not a procedure that most dentists do.

Tooth prepared for a filling. Dark stain is advanced decay (L). Decay removed but nerve is exposed (bleeding) (R).

After treating the exposed pulp (nerve) with oxygen ozone, a biocompatible filling (small white patch) is placed over the exposed pulp tissue. The tooth then received a permanent filling (not shown).

Case 2Pulpotomy

This is not a root canal procedure.
This is done to prevent a root canal or the removal of a tooth.
This is not a procedure that most dentists do.

Tooth with amalgam filling and advanced decay (L). Tooth sealed with dental dam and amalgam filling removed showing decay (R).

Much decay removed but still much remaining (L). As continued to excavate (clean) nerve is exposed (bleeding) (R).

Infected part of nerve is amputated (pulpotomy) exposing healthy nerve deeper in the canals (L). The remaining pulp tissue was treated with oxygen-ozone and a biocompatible filling (R). The tooth then received a ceramic crown (not shown).
