Over the years my Charlotte North Carolina area patients have benefited from my use of ozone on teeth. Like any concerned dentist I try to deliver the best possible care to my patients. Oxygen-ozone therapy helps me achieve the results my Charlotte NC area patients deserve. I now use oxygen-ozone in root canal therapy, surgery, cleanings and preventive care, and fillings, crown and bridges.

Ozone has many benefits when used properly. One of these benefits is that it is a powerful antimicrobial substance. Ozone kills microbes both directly and through the formation of ROSs.

"An oxidation reaction occurs upon any collision between an ozone molecule and a molecule of an oxidizable substance (i.e. bacteria, fungi (mold & yeast), viruses, forms of iron & manganese…) The weak bond splits off leaving oxygen as a by-product. During an oxidation reaction, organic molecules are changed and dissolved metals are made no longer soluble."

Ozone (green circles) attacks the cell envelope
of bacteria, viruses and other microbes.

Lysis: Disruption of the cell membrane which causes the contents of the cell to be released into the extracellular space.

Cell lysis occurs when the outside membrane
of a cell looses its integrity.

As the membrane is destroyed, extracellular fluid rushes into the cell and the cell pops like a balloon and is destroyed. This process is called cell lysis.

Most conventional sanitizers work by a chemical process called oxidation. The higher the “oxidizing potential” (a measure of oxidizing power) the more effective a substance is at killing germs. Ozone has a higher oxidizing potential than chlorine or chlorine bleach. In fact, ozone has the highest oxidizing potential of any substance that can be readily produced. As ozone reverts to diatomic oxygen it creates oxygen radicals and hydroxyl radicals which are also highly oxidizing.
